anish kapoor has been chosen to design london's 2012 olympic tower. it's supposed to be london's equivalent of the eiffel tower and it's going to be called "arcelormittal orbit," named after london's richest man, lakshmi mittal (the steel magnate who is going to be forking over most of the cash to build it). it's going to cost around $30 million USD.
inspiration came from the tower of babel. kapoor said, "there is a kind of medieval sense to it of reaching up to the sky, building the impossible. a procession, if you like. it's a long winding spiral: a folly that aspires to go even above the clouds and has something mythic about it."
i'm not sure how i feel about it... in one sense it's kind of hideously ugly and in another it's kind of cool. what do you think?
